What is the Raw Food Diet? [recipes] http://www.rarinjinda.com/?p=recipes&idar=40 2010-08-20 11:03:22 http://www.rarinjinda.com/40

The raw food diet is a diet based on unprocessed and uncooked plant foods, such as fresh fruit and vegetables, sprouts, seeds, nuts, grains, beans, nuts, dried fruit, and seaweed.

Heating food above 116 degrees F is believed to destroy enzymes in food that can assist in the digestion and absorption of food. Cooking is also thought to diminish the nutritional value and "life force" of food.

Typically, at least 75% of the diet must be living or raw.

What are the Benefits of the Raw Food Diet?

Proponents of the raw food diet believe it has numerous health benefits, including:

Increased energy Improved skin appearance Better digestion Weight loss Reduced risk of heart disease

The raw food diet contains fewer trans fats and saturated fat than the typical Western diet. It is also low in sodium and high in potassium, magnesium, folate, fiber and health-promoting plant chemicals called phytochemicals.

These properties are associated with a reduced risk of diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. For example, a study published in the Journal of Nutrition found that consumption of a raw food diet lowered plasma total cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations.

What are the Guidelines of the Raw Food Diet?

1. What can I eat? Unprocessed, preferably organic, whole foods such as:

Fresh fruits and vegetables Nuts Seeds Beans Grains Legumes Dried fruit Seaweed Unprocessed organic or natural foods Freshly juiced fruit and vegetables Purified water Young coconut milk

At least 75% of food consumed should not be heated over 116 degrees F.

2. What cooking techniques are used? Specific cooking techniques make foods more digestible and add variety to the diet, including:

Sprouting seeds, grains, and beans Juicing fruit and vegetables Soaking nuts and dried fruit Blending Dehydrating food

3. What equipment can I use?

A dehydrator,a piece of equipment that blows air through food at a temperature of less than 116 degrees F.

A good-quality juice extractor for juicing fruit and vegetables

A blender, food processor, or chopper to save time

Large glass containers to soak and sprout seeds, grains, and beans

Mason jars for storing sprouts and other food

Side Effects

Some people experience a detoxification reaction when they start the raw food diet, especially if their previous diet was rich in meat, sugar, and caffeine. Mild headaches, nausea, and cravings can occur but usually last for several days.

Precautions

The raw food diet may not be appropriate for certain people, such as:

Children

Pregnant or nursing women

People with anemia

People at risk for osteoporosis - A Washington University study found that people following a raw food diet had lower bone mass. Bone turnover rates, however, were similar to the group that ate a standard American diet.

Considerable time, energy, and commitment is needed to be healthy on the raw food diet. Many of the foods are made from scratch. Some ingredients may be hard to find, such as Rejuvelac (the fermented liquid drained from sprouted grains), sprouted flour, date sugar, young coconut milk, carob powder and Celtic sea salt.

People must be aware that certain nutritional deficiencies can occur on the raw food diet, including:

Calcium Iron B12 – The Journal of Nutrition study found that a raw food diet increased levels of homocysteine due to vitamin B-12 deficiency. Protein Calories

Critics of the raw food diet say while it’s true that some enzymes are inactivated when food is heated, it doesn’t matter because the body uses its own enzymes for digestion. In addition, cooking makes certain phytochemicals easier to absorb, such as beta-carotene in carrots.

Another critique is that the human body has changed in response to eating cooked foods. Some of these changes are that are jaws and teeth have become smaller, our stomachs have shrunk, and our small intestines have grown longer, lengthening the digestive surface area.

According to other alternative diet theories, such as macrobiotics, Ayurveda, and traditional Chinese medicine, a raw-only diet may not be appropriate for people living in colder climates or for people with certain constitutional types.

The 28 Healthiest Foods on the Planet [Part3] [recipes] http://www.rarinjinda.com/?p=recipes&idar=39 2010-08-04 14:38:41 http://www.rarinjinda.com/39

The following is a "healthy food hot list" consisting of the 29 food that will give you the biggest nutritional bang for you caloric buck, as well as decrease your risk for deadly illnesses like cancer, diabetes and heart disease. Along with each description is a suggestion as to how to incorporate these power-foods into your diet.

Grains, Beans, Dairy and Nuts

Quinoa

19. Quinoa The Power:A half cup of cooked quinoa has 5 grams of protein, more than any other grain, plus iron, riboflavin and magnesium. A half-cup has 318 calories, 5 grams of fat and 5 grams of fiber. Add to soup for a protein boost. Rinse first, or it will taste bitter.

Wheat Germ

20. Wheat Germ
The Power:A tablespoon gives you about 7 percent of your daily magnesium, which helps prevent muscle cramps; it is also a good source of vitamin E. One tablespoon has 27 calories, 1 gram of fat and 1 gram of fiber. Sprinkle some over yogurt, fruit or cereal.

Lentils

21. Lentils
The Power:Isoflavones, which may inhibit estrogen-promoted breast cancers, plus fiber for heart health and an impressive 9 grams of protein per half cup. A half-cup (cooked) has 115 calories, 0 fat and 8 grams of fiber. Isoflavones hold up through processing, so buy lentils canned, dried or already in soup. Take them to work, and you will have a protein packed lunch.

Peanuts

22. Peanuts
The Power:Studies show that peanuts or other nuts (which contain mostly unsaturated "good" fat) can lower your heart-disease risk by over 20 percent. One ounce has 166 calories, 14 grams of fat and 2 grams of fiber. Keep a packet in your briefcase, gym bag or purse for a protein-packed post-workout nosh or an afternoon pick me up that will satisfy you until supper, or chop a few into a stir-fry for a Thai accent.

Pinto Beans

23. Pinto Beans
The Power:A half cup has more than 25 percent of your daily requirement of folate, which helps protect against heart disease and reduces the risk of birth defects. A half-cup (canned) has 103 calories, 1 gram of fat and 6 grams of fiber. Drain a can, rinse and toss into a pot of vegetarian chili.

Yogurt

24.Yogurt
The Power:Bacteria in active-culture yogurt helps prevent yeast infections; calcium strengthens bones. A cup has 155 calories, 4 grams of fat, 0 grams of fiber. Get the plain kind and mix in your own fruit to keep calories and sugar down. If you are lactose intolerant, never fear -- yogurt should not bother your tummy.

Skim Milk

25. Skim Milk
The Power:Riboflavin (a.k.a. vitamin B2) is important for good vision and along with vitamin A might help improve eczema and allergies. Plus, you get calcium and vitamin D, too. One cup has 86 calories, 0 fat and 0 fiber. If you are used to high fat milk, don't go cold turkey; instead, mix the two together at first. Trust this fact: In a week or two you won't miss it!

Seafood

Shellfish (Clams, Mussels)

26. Shellfish (Clams, Mussels)
The Power: Vitamin B12 to support nerve and brain function, plus iron and hard-to-get minerals like magnesium and potassium. Three ounces has 126 to 146 calories, 2 to 4 grams of fat and 0 fiber. Try a bowl of tomato-based (and low fat) Manhattan clam chowder.

Salmon

27. Salmon
The Power:Cold-water fish like salmon, mackerel and tuna are the best sources of omega-3 fatty acids, which help reduce the risk of cardiac disease. A 3-ounce portion (cooked) has 127 calories, 4 grams of fat, 0 fiber. Brush fillets with ginger-soy marinade and grill or broil until fish flakes easily with a fork.

Crab

28. Crab
The Power:A great source of vitamin B12 and immunity-boosting zinc. A 3-ounce portion has 84 calories, 1 gram of fat, 0 fiber. The "crab" in sushi is usually made from fish; buy it canned instead and make your own crab cakes.

Vegetables

Onions

Chop onions for the maximum phytonutrient boost, or if you hate to cry, roast them with a little olive oil and serve with rice or other vegetables.

Artichokes

11. Artichokes
The Power:These odd-looking vegetables contain silymarin, an antioxidant that helps prevent skin cancer, plus fiber to help control cholesterol. One medium artichoke has 60 calories, 0 fat and 7 grams of fiber. Steam over boiling water for 30 to 40 minutes. Squeeze lemon juice on top, then pluck the leaves off with your fingers and use your teeth to scrape off the rich-tasting skin. When you get to the heart, you have found the best part!

Artichokes

12. Ginger
The Power:Gingerols may help reduce queasiness; other compounds may help ward off migraines and arthritis pain by blocking inflammation-causing prostaglandins. A teaspoon of fresh gingerroot has only 1 calorie, 0 fat and 0 fiber. Peel the tough brown skin and slice or grate into a stir-fry.

The Power:Lutein and zeaxanthin, carotenoids that help fend off macular degeneration, a major cause of blindness in older people. Plus, studies show this green fountain of youth may help reverse some signs of aging. One cup has 7 calories, 0 fat and 1 gram of fiber. Add raw leaves to a salad or saute with a little olive oil and garlic.

Bok Choy

15. Bok Choy (Chinese cabbage)
The Power:Brassinin, which some research suggests may help prevent breast tumors, plus indoles and isothiocyanates, which lower levels of estrogen, make this vegetable a double-barreled weapon against breast cancer. A cup will also give you 158mg of calcium (16 percent of your daily recommended requirement) to help beat osteoporosis. A cup (cooked) has 20 calories, 0 fat and 3 grams of fiber. Find it in your grocer's produce section or an Asian market. Slice the greens and juicy white stalks, then saute like spinach or toss into a stir-fry just before serving.

Squash

16. Squash (Butternut, Pumpkin, Acorn)
The Power:Winter squash has huge amounts of vitamin C and beta-carotene, which may help protect against endometrial cancer. One cup (cooked) has 80 calories, 1 gram of fat and 6 grams of fiber. Cut on in half, scoop out the seeds and bake or microwave until soft, then dust with cinnamon.

Watercress and Arugula

17. Watercress and Arugula
The Power:Phenethyl isothiocyanate, which, along with beta-carotene and vitamins C and E, may help keep cancer cells at bay. One cup has around 4 calories, 0 fat and 1 gram of fiber. Do not cook these leafy greens; instead, use them to garnish a sandwich or add a pungent, peppery taste to salad.

Garlic

18. Garlic
The Power:The sulfur compounds that give garlic its pungent flavor can also lower LDL ("bad") cholesterol, lower blood pressure and even reduce your risk of stomach and colon cancer. A clove has 4 calories, 0 fat and 0 fiber. Bake a whole head for 15 to 20 minutes, until soft and sweet and spread on bread instead of butter.

Fruits

Apricots

01. Apricots The Power: Beta-carotene, which helps prevent free-radical damage and protect the eyes. The body also turns beta-carotene into vitamin A, which may help ward off some cancers, especially of the skin. One apricot has 17 calories, 0 fat, 1 gram of fiber. Snacks on them dried, or if you prefer fresh, buy when still firm; once they soften, they lose nutrients.

Avocados

02. Avocados
The Power: Oleic acid, an unsaturated fat that helps lower overall cholesterol and raise levels of HDL, plus a good dose of fiber. One slice has 81 calories, 8 grams of fat and 3 grams of fiber. Try a few slices instead of mayonnaise to dress up your next burger.

Raspberries

03. Raspberries
The Power: Ellagic acid, which helps stall cancer-cell growth. These berries are also packed with vitamin C and are high in fiber, which helps prevent high cholesterol and heart disease. A cup has only 60 calories, 1 gram of fat and 8 grams of fiber. Top plain low-fat yogurt or oatmeal (another high fiber food) with fresh berries.

Cantaloupe

04. Cantaloupe
The Power: Vitamin C (117mg in half a melon, almost twice the recommended daily dose) and beta-carotene - both powerful antioxidants that help protect cells from free-radical damage. Plus, half a melon has 853mg of potassium - almost twice as much as a banana, which helps lower blood pressure. Half a melon has 97 calories, 1 gram of fat and 2 grams of fiber. Cut into cubes and freeze, then blend into an icy smoothie.

Cranberry

05. Cranberry Juice
The Power: Helps fight bladder infections by preventing harmful bacteria from growing. A cup has 144 calories, 0 grams of fat and 0 fiber. Buy 100 percent juice concentrate and use it to spice up your daily H20 without adding sugar.

Tomato

06. Tomato
The Power: Lycopene, one of the strongest carotenoids, acts as an antioxidant. Research shows that tomatoes may cut the risk of bladder, stomach and colon cancers in half if eaten daily. A tomato has 26 calories, 0 fat and 1 gram of fiber. Drizzle fresh slices with olive oil, because lycopene is best absorbed when eaten with a little fat.

Raisins

07. Raisins
The Power: These little gems are a great source of iron, which helps the blood transport oxygen and which many women are short on. A half-cup has 218 calories, 0 fat and 3 grams of fiber. Sprinkle raisins on your morning oatmeal or bran cereal - women, consider this especially during your period.

Figs

08. Figs
The Power: A good source of potassium and fiber, figs also contain vitamin B6, which is responsible for producing mood-boosting serotonin, lowering cholesterol and preventing water retention. The Pill depletes B6, so if you use this method of birth control, make sure to get extra B6 in your diet. One fig has 37 to 48 calories, 0 fat and 2 grams of fiber. (Cookie lovers - fig bars have around 56 calories, 1 gram of fat and 1 gram of fiber per cookie). Fresh figs are delicious simmered alongside a pork tenderloin and the dried variety make a great portable gym snack.

Lemons and Limes

9. Lemons and Limes
The Power: Limonene, furocoumarins and vitamin C, all of which help prevent cancer. A wedge has 2 calories, 0 fat and 0 fiber. Buy a few of each and squeeze over salads, fish, beans and vegetables for fat free flavor. See also: Beneficial Bytes:Lemons and Limes.

Tibetan Bowl Sound Massage Therapy [health] http://www.rarinjinda.com/?p=health&idar=33 2010-07-09 10:40:31 http://www.rarinjinda.com/33

Tibetan Bowl Sound Massage is profoundly relaxing. During the session, 4 metal Tibetan Sound Bowls are placed on the person’s body. The practitioner then tabs on the bowls following specific rhythm. As the bowls vibrate, they send waves of vibration throughout person’s body harmonizing cells. Beautiful sound produced by the Tibetan Bowls also have relaxing hypnotic effect on the brain, slowing brain waves and inducing deep meditative state.

7 benefits of Tibetan Bowl Sound Massage

Stress Reduction through deep relaxation and endorphin release
Liberates emotional traumas locked within the subconscious
Profound effect on acupuncture meridians
Activates self-healing mechanisms within the body
Promotes deeper sleep
Relief from headache, fatigue, insomnia, digestive disorders, joint or muscle aches, menstrual disorders, emotional imbalances
Aura harmonizing
Chakra balancing

How Tibetan Bowl Sound Therapy Works

Healing with the Power of Sound is one of the oldest and most natural forms of healing known to man.

The most basic element of the human being is the cell. The simplest way of communicating with the cells are through vibration. External vibrations cause a sympathetic resonance in the cells. When tapping a singing bowl placed on the body which consists of more than 70% of water, the sound transmitted cause the cell to resonate. The sound waves spread, as the concentric waves from a stone dropped in a pond, into larger and larger circles through blood, flesh, organs and even bones, relaxing them and at the same harmonizing and energizing them. In this way the more than 100 trillion cells that are the building blocks of the human body are receiving a gentle cell massage. A visual example of the cleansing power invoked here is what happens when we put jewelry or dentures into a supertonic bath and see how in a short while all the dirt and grime is shaken loose. In this way, sound can also release energy blockages through out the mind, body, and spirit.

Any sound affects the nervous system which in turn affects every cell in the body. The bowl vibrations are soothing enough to calm the nervous system yet powerful enough to travel deep into the body to penetrate the bones. Vibrations can travel into places you could never touch with your hands, to effect a healing that would be very difficult to recreate otherwise.

It is a combination between the sound of the bowl through the ear, over the eardrum and into the brain and the vibration of the bowl through the flesh of the body that causes the harmonizing, de-stressing effect of the bowls. The Tibetan Bowl Sound Massage practitioner taps the bowls in certain rhythms creating an entrancing energy.

When inner harmony is disturbed we loose our equilibrium. Every day stress makes us prone to illness and impairs our quality of life. Through sound massage such tensions and blockages in mind, body, and soul can be gently loosened.

Tibetian Bowl Sound Therapy stimulates the brain to make changes that increase our abilities in the following ways:

Healing stress related disorders (see below)

Detoxification down to the cellular and "bone deep" level
Deeper, more profound sleep
Synchronization of right and left hemispheres
Increased learning ability
Management or resolution of learning issues, ADD, ADHD, AUTISM
Deepening meditative states
Retrains the body/mind to let go of stress and heal itself
Balances Chakras
Achievement of the "relaxation response" effortlessly
Healing past emotional traumas and break through of limiting
behavior patterns
Relief from headache, fatigue, insomnia, menstrual difficulties,
digestive disorders, emotional imbalances, joint or muscle aches

Introducing RarinJinda’s newest treatment - Four Hands Aromatherapy Oil Massage with Herbal Compress [news] http://www.rarinjinda.com/?p=allnewsevent 2010-06-28 12:17:44 http://www.rarinjinda.com/12

Any visitor to Thailand will be familiar with traditional Aromatherapy Oil Massage done by a single therapist, yet few have ever experienced a Four-hands Aromatherapy Oil Massage. Four-hands massage is a type of massage therapy, which involves two therapists working simultaneously, creating a choreographed massage. The therapists’ hands move in harmony with each other without ever leaving your skin. Using our own blend of essential oils extracted from plants, fruits and flowers, the treatment deeply relaxes the body and relieves it from muscular pain and tension. The melodic rhythm of their strokes creates a pattern of sensation so pleasurable that you feel almost guilty for the indulgence.

During the most classic form of four-hands massage, the therapists mirror each other, with one therapist taking the lead while the other follows. The therapists usually use Swedish style massage techniques, combining long, slowing strokes with other techniques, which are designed to relax the body. Typically clients can request special attention for one area of the body, such as the back or legs, and the therapists can tailor the session to the needs of the client. Alternatively, each therapist may focus on a specific area of the body during a four-hands massage, with one working on the upper body and one working on the lower body.

Knees, elbows, feet and hands are used to press deep into tight and aching muscles, thereby allowing them to release long-held tension and relax. At the end, the herbal ball, consists of mixture of Thai herbs, are compressed on the client’s body which will leave you feeling stretched, loosened and deeply relaxed.

Many people enjoy four-hands massage because they find it extremely relaxing, and they enjoy the sensation of being pampered by two massage therapists. It can take some time to get used to, as the sensation is very different from regular massage.

Four-Hands Massage has its distinct benefits. First, the amount of relaxation and attention received by the host would double with Four-Hands Massage. The blood circulation, the amount of muscle relaxation is further increased.

Four-Hands Massage has been known to relieve patients from a variety of physical disorders as it effectively increases the blood flow on two separate parts of the body while being attended to by two therapists simultaneously. If the client desires a greater 'intensity' of pleasure level, a Four Handed Massage is definitely recommended.

9 Foods that reduce Stress Level [recipes] http://www.rarinjinda.com/?p=recipes&idar=32 2010-05-28 12:47:07 http://www.rarinjinda.com/32

Although May has been a terrible month for the overall Tourism Industry, after months-long protest of the red shirts in Central Bangkok and the aftermath riots across Bangkok and other provinces throughout the country, life must go on. Here's few tips on getting through these stress by taking in the right nutrition. Munching on these stress-free foods will help pull you back into the game for sure.

1. Oranges -- A German study in Psychopharmacology found that vitamin C helps reduce stress and return blood pressure and cortisol to normal levels after a stressful situation. Vitamin C is also well-known for boosting your immune system.

2. Sweet Potatoes -- Sweet potatoes can be particularly stress-reducing because they can satisfy the urge you get for carbohydrates and sweets when you are under a great deal of stress. They are packed full of beta-carotene and other vitamins, and the fiber helps your body to process the carbohydrates in a slow and steady manner.

3. Dried Apricots -- Apricots are rich in magnesium, which is a stress-buster and a natural muscle relaxant as well.

4. Almonds, Pistachios & Walnuts -- Almonds are packed with B and E vitamins, which help boost your immune system, and walnuts and pistachios help lower blood pressure.

5. Turkey -- Turkey contains an amino acid called L-tryptophan. This amino acid triggers the release of serotonin, which is a feel-good brain chemical. This is the reason why many people who eat turkey feel relaxed, or even tired, after eating it. L-Tryptophan has a documented calming effect.

6. Spinach -- A deficiency in magnesium can cause migraine headaches and a feeling of fatigue. One cup of spinach provides 40 percent of your daily needs for magnesium.

7. Salmon -- Diets high in omega-3 fatty acids protect against heart disease. A study from Diabetes & Metabolism found that omega-3s keep the stress hormones cortisol and adrenaline from peaking.

8. Avocados -- The monounsaturated fats and potassium in avocados help lower blood pressure. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute says that one of the best ways to lower blood pressure is to consume enough potassium (avocados have more than bananas).

9. Green Vegetables -- Broccoli, kale, and other dark green vegetables are powerhouses of vitamins that help replenish our bodies in times of stress.

More stress-busting tips:

Exercise regularly

Drink an energy shake for breakfast

Eat small meals throughout the day, which will keep your blood sugar stable (when blood sugar is low, mental, physical, and emotional energy decreases, and stress increases).

Stress Management [talk] http://www.rarinjinda.com/?p=talk&idar=31 2010-05-24 14:50:16 http://www.rarinjinda.com/31

Our lifestyles these days require a great deal of hard work and success in all aspects from business, family and personal life. The constant pressure of “go go go” or “bigger, better and faster” surrounds us and pushes us harder, harder and harder. This inevitably has a negative effect on our health and happiness. Generally this because we lead our life under the misconception that our happiness depends upon “external factors”. These factors are such things as people, success and events that make us feel good. As these “external factors” give us pleasure, naturally enough they make us desire to have them. We feel so compelled to satisfy these desires that it gives us an everlasting, thirst or pressure that must always be gratified. If not, we are not happy. As a result we find ourselves running in these squirrel cages of trying to satisfy our desires one after another in hope that one day we will be truly satisfied and contented. Unfortunately, the day can never come as there is always something just out of reach. This is why we get disappointed and are so stressed out. To get out of this vicious cycle, we have to know where desires come from, and how to understand them.

Having realized this, all we need to do control unhealthy desires. No desire, no disappointment, no stress. We then have a better chance to have a happy, stress free life.

Yoga Trends for 2010 [yoga] http://www.rarinjinda.com/?p=yoga&idar=30 2010-05-19 17:31:56 http://www.rarinjinda.com/30

Trends for mind body fitness in 2010.

Digital Yoga With exergaming, apps and 3G phones, working out whenever and wherever you want is easier than ever. The online yoga community is growing stronger than ever thanks to blogs and social sites like Twitter, YogaMates and LoveYoga, and this is just the beginning.

Pilates Specialty Classes Pilates Jumpboard, circuit classes and cardio mix classes are popping up at studios throughout the city. I love traditional pilates workouts, but these fusion and spin-off classes are a smart way for instructors to keep clients interested and train the body in a different way. I just hope they don't overshadow the brilliant, traditional Joseph Pilates method.

Yoga Gyms A yoga gym has the pay structure and amenities of a gym, but only offers a variety of yoga classes for members to tone their bodies and mind. Potentially, this could be a brilliant idea, but I'm also a little nervous that it might bring the gym attitude into the yoga studio.

More Mind Body Classes at Gyms To compete with popular yoga and pilates studios, gyms are going to expand their group exercise offerings to include more than the standard power yoga or pilates mat classes. Expect various forms of yoga, pilates and mind body fitness (think barre workouts) to continue to pop up on class schedules at gyms that wish to stay afloat in these tough economic times.

Smart Workout Clothing Over the next year, we'll continue to see clothing that wicks moisture, resists odor and has design elements for better performance. One of the coolest things I've seen so far, the Nike Stitch a Fit Capri, with built-in knee pads for yoga, is the perfect example.

Proper Credentials Say goodbye to those "become a yoga instructor over the weekend" certification programs, because according to ACE, gyms and studios are finally recognizing the importance of properly certified trainers and instructors. A shame this is just starting to gain light, but better late than never.

Classes catered to your body type These types of classes are much-needed to get people who could benefit from a regular practice comfortable with yoga, and perhaps on a larger scale, comfortable in their own skin.

Top Health Tips for 2010 [health] http://www.rarinjinda.com/?p=health&idar=29 2010-05-15 11:57:09 http://www.rarinjinda.com/29

The secret to living a healthy life starts with a healthy mind. Our experts give you the best health advice for 2010.

The best habit to adopt is daily exercise. But don’t perform the same exercise every day. Have three or four different regimens, and rotate through them.

The simple act of taking a daily “baby” aspirin (81 mg) can decrease the chance of heart attack, stroke and other serious health problems in higher-risk patients. But always check with your doctor.

Photo by Tourism Authority of Thailand.

The key is to achieve balance between work and your personal life,
because when all is said and done, your legacy is your family and the people you love.

Get a physical in 2010!
And those who have had regular checkups should not stop!

Happiness is the least known health tip.
It’s not that unhappy people will always live shorter lives. But when an individual has a happy life that is well balanced with family, love, a great career and interesting hobbies, they will live longer.

My best advice:
Restrict your calories. You can make up all the stories you want about different diets, but the only thing that truly counts is how many calories you eat a day.

Wellness is a verb.
Think of health not as a target, but as a journey that has no end.

Avoid smoking.
That’s something we all know about and give lip service to, but it’s just truly devastating what smoking can do to people, and yet amazing what quitting smoking can do to people.

Laugh a lot—why?
It will put you in the right mood to not take life so seriously. We spent years studying cortisol, and when you laugh stress hormones plummet.

Have a rich social life.

Take a mini-chill.
Hubert Benson, founder of Harvard’s Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine, taught me to incorporate mini meditations throughout the day. It allows the mind and body to have a moment to just turn it off.

Avoid toxic stress
—meaning any stress with feelings of helplessness, hopelessness and defeat.

Use your head.
The secret to living a healthy life starts with a healthy mind that must be maintained throughout your life. It’s gotta be worked.

Top 10 Global Food Trends [recipes] http://www.rarinjinda.com/?p=recipes&idar=28 2010-05-15 11:46:13 http://www.rarinjinda.com/28

Health and Convenience Health and convenience were the buzzwords driving the global food industry in 2010.

Here are the top 10 trends:

Quick Fix: People want to eat at home, but people want less hassle in the kitchen. Easy to prepare and ready to eat are key ingredients for most of us. We should expect to see more ultra-quick foods, bagged salads and side dishes.

Drive-and Go: More of us are ordering take-out from full-service restaurants. Take-out sales from these restaurants account for almost 10% of sales. More than half of Americans eat this way during the week.

Inherently Healthy: Consumers are increasingly choosing naturally healthy foods such as fruit, vegetables, salads, nuts and yogurt. Fruit is now America’s second-favorite snack.

Fancy: People are choosing premium, gourmet foods. Fish, in particular, is undergoing something of a gourmet makeover.

Farm-Friendly: Organic and natural are hot, so is fair trade. Expect cocoa to follow on the heels of coffee and tea.

Layering of Flavors: Flavored oils and vinegars, pairings of fruity and tangy flavors, Asian, Central American and Latin American flavors are in vogue.

Grazing: Healthier snacks in vending machines, single-serving snacks, nutrition bars, diet bars, energy drinks and mineral waters are “in.”

Low, No, and Less: Low fat trumps low carb in what people seek in labels. Trans fats are on their way out. Demand for low calorie and light products will continue to grow. Watch for allergen-free claims on food labels.

Doctoring Through Diet: Nearly two-thirds of shoppers tried to manage or treat a condition through diet. 72% of this effort addressed heart health. Next to low fat, whole grains were the most influential food label claim, influencing 62% of shoppers. Dairy products with cholesterol-lowering sterols, antioxidant-rich chocolate are making an appearance. Expect more functional foods to appear.

Global Gangbusters: Many of the same issues affecting Americans affect overseas, too. Health and convenience loom just as large.

These trends are promising, so long as the food industry remains willing to offer convenience without compromising on the demand for healthier food. Fads will come and go, and the government will continue to scrutinize health claims made by food manufacturers. The ageing of baby boomers is driving the food industry in a new direction, one that could have a significant impact on the future health of the population. And that can only be a good thing.

How Much to Call Healthy (Alcoholic) Drink [recipes] http://www.rarinjinda.com/?p=recipes&idar=27 2010-03-26 13:55:01 http://www.rarinjinda.com/27

As the Thai New Year Festival or 'Songkran' is approaching, it's another occassion to celebrate. However, we urge our fellow members to drink responsibly during this auspicious occassion. Here's a few tips on how much to call a healthy alcoholic drink.

We all know about the consequences of drinking too much alcohol so well that it’s dangerous to our body especially to liver and brain this include accidents that might occurred because of it. It is very important to consider if you have any health problems or diseases and what kind of drinks you want to have such as wine, whisky, or beer.

People who have disease should not drink alcohol at all. For those who have to take medicine should not drink due to the reaction between alcohol and medicine will cause unfavorable or bad effect as we have known from the news that someone died because of drinking alcohol with sleeping pill or some found Hepatitis from drinking alcohol with antibiotics.

For some who don’t have any health problems may allow to drink a bit per day. From several researches in the past decade said that if drinking at specific amount, it will help decrease LDL – Cholesterol (Bad type). LDL is the fat that causes blood vessels occlusion.

After all, there is a standard drink to determine the amount of drinking each type of alcohol as follows; Types of Alcoholic Beverage

  1. Whisky or 40 degrees spirits alcohol = 43 cc. or 1.5 oz.
  2. Beer (5% alcohol)* = 341 cc. or 12 oz. (small can)
  3. Table wine (8-12% alcohol) = 142 cc. or 5 oz.
  4. Fortified wine or Port wine (18% alcohol) = 85 cc. or 3 oz.

* Beer in Thailand is stronger than indicated above (about 6-10%) Therefore, one standard drink will be less than one can.

Males should not have more than two standard drinks while females should not have more than one standard drink. Both male and female should not drink more than 3-4 times a week or everyday and it should be sipping during a big meal.

However, I still think that “No Alcohol” always the best because when you start drinking, it automatically decrease the ability of self-controlled and difficult to limit your alcohol consumption and one important thing, DO NOT forget, if you drive any kinds of vehicle, you must not drink as a great responsibility for your own life and society.

Be a responsible drinker this Songkran. Sawasdee Pee Mai kub.

Yoga and Pilates, a new combination for Yoga Training! [yoga] http://www.rarinjinda.com/?p=yoga&idar=26 2010-02-23 15:06:23 http://www.rarinjinda.com/26

What is yoga?

Yoga is the best and most time-tested path to physical and mental well-being known to mankind. While some people think of yoga simply as physical exercise, it is actually a complete system for overall health and well-being. It includes everything from physical postures, personal hygiene, and a healthy diet to premeditation, breathing, and relaxation techniques. The most advanced forms of meditation and self-realization are also a part of yoga. RarinJinda’s workouts focus on yoga’s physical techniques.

Why do yoga?

Like many forms of exercise, yoga asanas effectively stretch and strengthen your body. The greatest benefits of yoga asanas, however, come from their profound effects on the internal systems of the body. By bending, stretching, twisting, and flexing in the various postures, you bathe your internal organs with oxygenated blood and prana, also known as life force energy or chi. Yoga asanas soothe and tone your nerves and regulate the endocrine system, which is responsible for the production of hormones—one of the keys to both physical and mental health. They also improve digestion and elimination, strengthen the respiratory system, and tone the reproductive organs. Although yoga techniques like asanas, breathing, and relaxation are extremely effective in relieving stress, it is Yoga Sound meditation that relieves deep-seated stress and anxiety, enabling you to experience yoga's greatest gifts: spiritual happiness and inner peace.

What is Pilates?

Derived from ancient yoga asanas, the Pilates exercise system was formulated by Joseph Pilates over 80 years ago for more specific and limited purposes. Although Pilates is not a complete balanced or holistic exercise and health system, it is quite useful. Pilates focuses mainly on cultivating core strength in the body and lengthening the spine. Practiced for decades by dancers, Pilates has become popular in recent years for its largely aesthetic body sculpting effect. Pilates can be a valuable tool for enhancing strength, definition, and good posture in partnership with Yoga.

Guidelines for yoga and Pilates practice:

  1. Yoga postures, especially inversions and those that compress the abdomen, should not be done on a full stomach. Listen to your body—if you practice too soon after eating or drinking, certain poses will feel uncomfortable.
  2. It’s best to practice yoga asanas barefoot, using a yoga mat or nonslip surface for standing poses. A mat, rug, or folded yoga blanket will provide firm padding for other asanas.
  3. Wear comfortable clothing, something that allows you to move freely.
  4. Ideally, the room should be well ventilated. Have enough space to extend your arms and legs in all directions without hitting anything.
  5. While practicing, concentrate on the feeling that the asana is producing in your body.
  6. If you feel too weak or shaky in a pose, come out of it. Gradually, you will build up your strength and be able to hold the pose longer.
  7. Don't go beyond your personal limitations, but extend your boundaries gently. Doing the asanas correctly means doing them to the best of your ability without straining.
  8. Throughout the workout, focus on your breath, inhaling and exhaling fully and completely through your nose. Breathing with awareness not only feels good, but also balances and regulates energy flow within the body, strengthening your internal organs and boosting your resistance to disease.

Why not try it out? RarinJinda Wellness Spa Resort offers our guest complimentary Yoga Classes Daily at 8 am and 6 pm. For more info, contact rsvn@rarinjinda.com

What's Fusion Cuisine? A new types of cuisine or a fashion term? [recipes] http://www.rarinjinda.com/?p=recipes&idar=25 2010-02-23 14:49:16 http://www.rarinjinda.com/25

Fusion cuisine is general term for the combination of various forms of cookery, the concept can take several forms. One approach is regional fusion that combines the cuisine of a region or sub-region into a single eating experience. Of these sort, Asian fusion restaurants have become popular in many parts of the United States, often featuring Indian, East Asian, and South-East Asian dishes alongside one another and offering dishes that are inspired combinations of such cuisines. In Australia, due to the incresasing influx of migrants, fusion cuisine is being reinvented and is becoming increasingly the norm at numerous cafes and restaurants; with Sydney now considered one of the best cities in the world with regard to the quality and creativity of asian-fusion restaurants.

Another incarnation of fusion cuisine is a more eclectic approach, featuring original dishes using varieties of ingredients from various cuisines and regions and combining them. Such a restaurant might feature a wide variety of dishes inspired by a combination of various regional cuisines with new ideas.

A third approach uses foods with a form based on one cuisine, but prepared using ingredients and flavors inherent to another cuisine or cuisines. For instance, pizza made with cheddar and pepper jack cheese, salsa, refried beans and other common taco ingredients is often marketed as "Taco Pizza" or a similar concept, and is a fusion of Italian-American (pizza) and Mexican-American cuisines. Similar approaches have been used for fusion-sushi, such as rolling maki with different types of rice and ingredients, e.g. curry and basmati rice, cheese and salsa sauce with Spanish rice, or spiced ground lamb and capers rolled with Greek-style rice and grape leaves (resembling inside-out dolmades).

Since fusion cuisine is a general term, it is legitimately applied to either sort of restaurant. While many diners feature dishes from Greek, Italian, and sometimes Asian cuisines side-by-side, these restaurants are generally not considered fusion as they fail to combine any elements of the cooking styles and also have no over-arching fusion or eclectic theme.

To sample great fusion cuisine, try it at Deck1 Exotic Scene & Cuisine Chiang Mai, a superior restaurant by the Ping River. Recommended dishes include Thai-style Pomelo Salad with Tempura Shrimps and Salmon Roe, Miso Tom Yum Soup, Crisp Skinned Salmon on Wasabi Mashed Potato with Wakame Sauce and more.

Ten Foods for a Healthy Heart - Keep Your Heart Healthy [recipes] http://www.rarinjinda.com/?p=recipes&idar=24 2010-02-05 16:50:11 http://www.rarinjinda.com/24

As Valentine is approaching, this month's column focus on Ten Recommended foods for a Healthy Heart, so that it matches the them of this special day.

Heart disease is the one of the leading cause of death and is killing more and more people throughout the world.

Dietary advice for reducing heart disease risk includes eating a balanced diet with less saturated fat from red meats, more fresh fruits and vegetables, more fish, less sugar, more fiber and for many people, fewer total calories. Then you can make your heart and the rest of your cardiovascular system even healthier by adding more of these foods:

Salmon

Fish is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids that protect your heart by reducing both inflammation and the risk of blood clots. These fats also work to keep your cholesterol levels healthy. Eat salmon or other oily ocean fish like tuna, sardines or herring at least two times per week. For a heart-healthy meal, try grilled salmon steaks with a green vegetable and a side salad with a sprinkling of lemon juice instead of high-calorie salad dressing.

Olive Oil

Olive oil reduces your risk of heart disease by lowering your LDL cholesterol levels. Choose olive oil for cooking, or make a nice dip for whole grain bread by pouring a bit of olive oil in a small bowl and add a bit of balsamic vinegar and a sprinkle of oregano.

Oats

Oats contain a soluble fiber called beta glucan that helps reduce total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol. Soluble fiber also helps keep your digestive system healthy. Enjoy oatmeal with just a small amount of brown sugar and plenty of strawberries and walnuts for breakfast. Cold cereals made with oats are also great with low-fat milk or soy milk plus slices of fresh fruit.

Apples

Apples contain a phytochemical called quercetin which acts as an antiinflammatory and will help prevent blood clots as well. Apples contain vitamins and fiber, come in several delicious varieties and are portable. Eat an apple with a handful of walnuts or almonds as a healthy snack or add apple slices to your healthy salads.

Almonds
Almonds and other nuts contain healthy oils, vitamin E and other substances that will help keep cholesterol levels in check. Almonds are also a good source of protein and fiber. Almonds make a great snack on their own, or sprinkle slivered almonds on green beansasparagus with lemon juice as a deliciously healthy side dish. or

Red wine

Red wine contains a powerful antioxidant called resveratrol. Resveratrol has been shown to be good for your heart. Be sure to enjoy red wine in moderation. Studies show that only 4 to 8 ounces of red wine is needed each day.

Whole Grains

Whole grains provide vitamins and fiber that will help to keep your heart healthy. Make a deliciously healthy sandwich with two slices of 100-percent whole-grain bread, three ounces of lean turkey breast, lots of sliced tomatoes and avocado, plus lettuce and a bit of mustard. Switch from white pasta to whole grain pasta too.

Green leafy vegetables

Green leafy vegetables contain folate, which helps to keep homocysteine levels down, and vitamin E. Green leafy vegetables have also been associated with better retention of memory as age. Try using fresh spinach leaves or other greens for your favorite salad instead of iceberg lettuce.

Tomatoes

Tomatoes are packed with vitamins and lycopene, which has been shown to reduce heart disease risk. Add thick slices of tomatoes to sandwiches and salads or enjoy tomato sauce on whole wheat pasta. In fact, cooked tomato sauce and canned tomato sauce that you buy in the store both contain more lycopene than raw tomatoes.

Soy

Soy protein has been shown to prevent heart attacks and soy makes an excellent protein substitute for red meat, which will reduce your saturated fat intake. Add tofu to your favorite stir fry or pour soy milk on your morning cereal.

Keep your heart healthy and stay longer and be your Valentine's special gift for the lifetime.

Can Hot Yoga Help To Lose Weight Faster? [yoga] http://www.rarinjinda.com/?p=yoga&idar=23 2010-02-01 18:06:43 http://www.rarinjinda.com/23

Bikram Yoga, which is also known as Hot Yoga, is getting more popular among yoga community. One of the key reasons is that people believe that hot yoga will help them to lose weight in a quick and easy way. The perception comes from the experience of sweating profusely in the class.

Now, is it true that Bikram Yoga will help you to lose weight? Read on to find out more.

Bikram Yoga class is conducted in a room heated to 105°F (40.5°C) with a humidity of 40%. Therefore, everyone will sweat like pig. Some gyms are pushing hot yoga packages to their members with the following claims:

1. Hot yoga make you sweat. The more you sweat, the more calories you burn.
2. Sweating will also detoxify your body with healthier circulatory system which brings positive effect on metabolism. With better metabolism, you can shed your weight easily.
3. Warm temperature warm your muscles easily. By warming your muscles, you can burn fat easily.
4. Hot yoga will help build your willpower and mental strength that comes from the challenge of practicing yoga in a heated environment. You can then resist temptation to overeat and will lose weight.

Now, are all of the claims true?

Let’s look at the first and second point. Hot yoga makes you sweat. Fine, but is sweating really a good indication of detoxification and therefore helping you to lose weight faster? When you sweat, you lose mainly water. Once you drink water to rehydrate yourself, you will regain the weight. In fact, it is not true that the more you sweat, the more calories you burn.

As for the third point saying warmed muscles will burn fat easily. We do not find any scientific proof about the direct correlation between warmed muscles and calories burning.

Last point, hot yoga build your willpower. I think that it is possible and it may really work for some people. But, many other sports or activities you can do so to build the similar mental strength too.

Don’t get us wrong. We are not saying hot yoga is bad. Hot yoga, just like the other types of yoga, is good. Our thought on this issue:

* Our concern is that people are expecting miracle after attending only few sessions of the hot yoga class.
Right after the class, some people will quickly stand on the scale and jump for joy after seeing the “weight loss”. Those are temporary loss. Like other exercise, you can only see results after attending Bikram yoga for several times a week and for at least few months. After practicing yoga for sometime, you will develop muscle tone through various asanas or postures.
* Second, hot yoga should NOT be the only weight loss tool if you seriously want to lose weight.
You need to have healthy eating plan and do other exercise too. In fact, other cardiovascular exercise such as jogging, swimming or cycling may help you lose weight faster than yoga.

Weight loss should not be the only reason you start learning yoga. Yoga improves flexibility and also help release stress. Massage can benefit arthritis [health] http://www.rarinjinda.com/?p=health&idar=22 2010-01-19 13:41:12 http://www.rarinjinda.com/22

There are two kinds of arthritis

- Osteoarthritis (OA) is degenerative joint disease
- Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) which is an autoimmune disease

What causes OA & RA?

RA happens when the defense system of the body does not work properly. It affects joints, bones, and organs. Feeling the pain in the pain and wrist joints is very common.

How massage can help?

Massage treatment can provide arthritis relief. Massage can play a big role in alleviating the symptoms of both stress and arthritis, and it is also directed at the joint, but overall relaxation can help reduce arthritis symptoms.

More massage benefits…
1. Increase circulation, flexibility, and feelings of wellness
2. Decrease joint stiffness & muscle aches
3. Reduce swelling
4. Sooth pain
5. Less harmful than drugs and medications
6. Maintain a joint range of motion by gently stretching
7. Clam irritated nerves

Is Processed food good for your health? [recipes] http://www.rarinjinda.com/?p=recipes&idar=21 2010-01-08 15:08:44 http://www.rarinjinda.com/21

Processed foods have been altered from their natural state for safety reasons and for convenience. The methods used for processing foods include canning, freezing, refrigeration, dehydration and aseptic processing.

We tend to think of processed foods as bad, but it turns out that many processed foods are not unhealthy. For example, milk would be considered a processed food because it is pasteurized to kill bacteria and homogenized to keep fats from separating. While some people prefer to drink raw milk, most of us should consume the "processed" version we find in our grocery stores.

Another healthy example of food processing is frozen vegetables. While fresh may be best, freezing vegetables preserves vitamins and minerals and makes them convenient to cook and eat all year around. Fruit and vegetable juice is also an example of a healthy processed food. In fact, some orange juice is fortified with calcium to make it even more nutritious.

Of course, there are a lot of processed foods that aren't good for you. Many processed foods are made with trans fats, saturated fats, and large amounts of sodium and sugar. These types of foods should be avoided, or at least eaten sparingly.

Processed foods that may not be as healthy as fresh foods include:

canned foods with lots of sodium
white breads and pastas made with refined white flour, which are not as healthy as those made with whole grains
packaged high-calorie snack foods, like chips and cheese snacks
high-fat convenience foods, like cans of ravioli
frozen fish sticks and frozen dinners
packaged cakes and cookies
boxed meal mixes
sugary breakfast cereals
processed meats

Processed meats might be some of the worst of these foods. Eating these meats may increase your risk of colorectal, kidney and stomach cancer. Processed meats include hot dogs, bologna, sausage, ham and other packaged lunch meats.

These processed foods and prepackaged meals are very convenient and popular. If you do shop for these foods, be sure to look for products that are made with whole grains, low in sodium and calories, and free of trans fats. Make sure you pay attention to serving size, too, and balance out the processed foods you eat with a delicious fresh salad and some whole grain bread.

Given the change in many people's lifestyle, your daily intake needs to be considered wisely.

Yoga Tips - Advice for Beginners [yoga] http://www.rarinjinda.com/?p=yoga&idar=20 2010-01-08 13:35:48 http://www.rarinjinda.com/20

With a few yoga tips, it's easier to avoid some of the frustrations that can occur by just starting yoga without any idea of the complexity or variance that is yoga.

Much has been written about the many benefits of yoga, from increasing muscular strength and flexibility, to lowering blood pressure and stress levels and plenty in between.

With this increased awareness has come an increase in popularity, with many people keen to learn yoga tips to make their experience more fulfilling and enjoyable. This article of yoga tips will offer advice on selecting a class, preparation for yoga, tips to help you get the most out of classes and precautions to help avoid injury.

When starting any new fitness program, it's most people's first instinct to start out brimming with enthusiasm and effort. This is particularly true of yoga, which is often thought of as easier and less intense than aerobic exercise. Do not be fooled, however! As with anything, it's important to start out slowly. Listed below are some yoga tips to consider before taking classes:

Borrow or buy a yoga book
(or even better a DVD or video) that's aimed at beginners. The health and wellness section of any good bookstore will have good books that offer plenty of yoga tips and visual demonstrations of poses.

Using the examples in your book,
DVD or video to practice at home will help you master some of the poses before you start attending classes, and help build your confidence.

There are MANY different styles of yoga,
each with a different emphasis (eg stretching, strength, or fitness) and it's important to find the one that best suits you.

Find a teacher that you like and trust,
and who gives all their students individual help and attention as needed. A good teacher will gladly pass on his or her own yoga tips.

Once you've started taking yoga classes, there are many things you can do to to make things easier and more enjoyable. These yoga tips involve both things you should do to prepare for classes, and things to keep in mind during classes :

The best time for yoga is in the morning before breakfast,
or later in the evening. At RarinJinda Wellness Spa Resort Chiang Mai, we have classes available daily at 8 am and 6 pm.

Before beginning a yoga class you should empty your bowels and bladder,
and remove mucus from your nose, throat and lungs.

It's best to wear clothing that's loose and comfortable,
for easy movement.

Try to avoid eating (except for a light snack if you need it) for 2 hours before a class,
as it will more than likely make you feel tired and heavy.

Try and be punctual to classes;
the poses are done in sequence for a reason.

Make sure you completely master the easy poses before you move onto the harder ones.
DON'T feel foolish if you can't master a difficult pose the first few times you attempt it.

Like anything physical, yoga does carry the risk of injury if it's not done properly. The following yoga tips address how to protect your body while nurturing it at the same time :

If you have a permanent injury or condition that you think could be worsened by doing yoga,
have a chat with your doctor about which poses might be best avoided.

Be sure to tell your yoga instructor before the class if you are ill or injured;
they can tell you how to alter the poses to avoid making things worse.

Whatever you do, DON'T force yourself to look exactly like the instructor in the class,
the person on the TV or the picture in the book. Just because you mightn't look exactly like your instructor when you do a particular pose, doesn't mean you're not doing it "right". Forcing your body beyond its' limits will only cause injury.

Be wary of the difference between feeling sensations or resistance and feeling pain;
you should not feel pain while doing yoga, and if you do it could mean you aren't doing something right or need to adjust a pose to suit you better.

Many yoga instructors assist students hands-on;
if they try and move your body too much for you, or force your body into various poses, however, you could end up injured.

10 Tips To Healthy Eating [recipes] http://www.rarinjinda.com/?p=recipes&idar=18 2009-11-30 14:19:55 http://www.rarinjinda.com/18
10 Tips To Healthy Eating Experts agree the key to healthy eating is the time-tested advice of balance, variety and moderation. In short, that means eating a wide variety of foods without getting too many calories or too much of any one nutrient. These 10 tips can help you follow that advice while still enjoying the foods you eat.

1. Eat a variety of nutrient-rich foods. You need more than 40 different nutrients for good health, and no single food supplies them all. Your daily food selection should include bread and other whole-grain products; fruits; vegetables; dairy products; and meat, poultry, fish and other protein foods. How much you should eat depends on your calorie needs.

2. Enjoy plenty of whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Surveys show most people don't eat enough of these foods. Do you eat 6-11 servings from the bread, rice, cereal and pasta group, 3 of which should be whole grains? Do you eat 2-4 servings of fruit and 3-5 servings of vegetables? If you don't enjoy some of these at first, give them another chance. Look through cookbooks for tasty ways to prepare unfamiliar foods.

3. Maintain a healthy weight. The weight that's right for you depends on many factors including your sex, height, age and heredity. Excess body fat increases your chances for high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, some types of cancer and other illnesses. But being too thin can increase your risk for osteoporosis, menstrual irregularities and other health problems. If you're constantly losing and regaining weight, a registered dietitian can help you develop sensible eating habits for successful weight management. Regular exercise is also important to maintaining a healthy weight.

4. Eat moderate portions. If you keep portion sizes reasonable, it's easier to eat the foods you want and stay healthy. Did you know the recommended serving of cooked meat is 3 ounces, similar in size to a deck of playing cards? A medium piece of fruit is 1 serving and a cup of pasta equals 2 servings. A pint of ice cream contains 4 servings.

5. Eat regular meals. Skipping meals can lead to out-of-control hunger, often resulting in overeating. When you're very hungry, it's also tempting to forget about good nutrition. Snacking between meals can help curb hunger, but don't eat so much that your snack becomes an entire meal.

6. Reduce, don't eliminate certain foods. Most people eat for pleasure as well as nutrition. If your favorite foods are high in fat, salt or sugar, the key is moderating how much of these foods you eat and how often you eat them. Identify major sources of these ingredients in your diet and make changes, if necessary. Adults who eat high-fat meats or whole-milk dairy products at every meal are probably eating too much fat. Use the Nutrition Facts panel on the food label to help balance your choices. Choosing skim or low-fat dairy products and lean cuts of meat such as flank steak and beef round can reduce fat intake significantly. If you love fried chicken, however, you don't have to give it up. Just eat it less often. When dining out, share it with a friend, ask for a take-home bag or a smaller portion.

7. Balance your food choices over time. Not every food has to be "perfect." When eating a food high in fat, salt or sugar, select other foods that are low in these ingredients. If you miss out on any food group one day, make up for it the next. Your food choices over several days should fit together into a healthy pattern.

8. Know your diet pitfalls. To improve your eating habits, you first have to know what's wrong with them. Write down everything you eat for three days. Then check your list according to the rest of these tips. Do you add a lot of butter, creamy sauces or salad dressings? Rather than eliminating these foods, just cut back your portions. Are you getting enough fruits and vegetables? If not, you may be missing out on vital nutrients.

9. Make changes gradually. Just as there are no "superfoods" or easy answers to a healthy diet, don't expect to totally revamp your eating habits overnight. Changing too much, too fast can get in the way of success. Begin to remedy excesses or deficiencies with modest changes that can add up to positive, lifelong eating habits. For instance, if you don't like the taste of skim milk, try low-fat. Eventually you may find you like skim, too.

10. Remember, foods are not good or bad. Select foods based on your total eating patterns, not whether any individual food is "good" or "bad." Don't feel guilty if you love foods such as apple pie, potato chips, candy bars or ice cream. Eat them in moderation, and choose other foods to provide the balance and variety that are vital to good health.

If yoga is not an exercise, so how can yoga help us to get better health? [yoga] http://www.rarinjinda.com/?p=yoga&idar=14 2009-10-19 12:04:56 http://www.rarinjinda.com/14

Most people understand that Asana (The posture of yoga) is a kind of exercise. Some even perform Asana in an aerobics approach with the heartbeat of over 120 times per minute in 30 minutes time and think that they had done yoga already.

When looking at an old original yoga book, it is clearly stated that Asana should be done with peace, relax and powerless manner. So what is the positive effect of practicing Asana?

It is necessary for those who have interest in yoga to understand the nature of Asana: to realize the accuracy of practicing it and gain most of the benefit to yourself.

Flexible spine

We can see it clearly that Asana is the movement of spine into many directions which are:

Back bend
Forward bend
Spinal twist
Side bend

When human move their spine into many directions everyday, they will get flexible spine which mean their backbone works normally.

One important thing about backbone is the nervous system. Backbone is a key factor for nervous system to work normally. If you take good care of your spine, it also means that you are taking good care your nervous system.

Blood circulation that works normally by using less energy

When you practice Asana, you can feel that your blood is circulating. Sometimes, you experience blood congestion until you start feeling the pulse of that point. In some position, you may feel warm but other position may immediately numb you because of the blood circulation system.

Then, we do Asana alternate with break. During the break, you will feel your blood circulating from your previous Asana position. Asana helps stimulate blood circulation to work in every part of the body so Asana is not inferior to Aerobics. The difference is exercising blood will circulate in every part of your body but Asana will go to specific area such as stomach, chest and head; not to your leg or arm muscle. We can say that Asana is useful for blood circulation system becuase it uses less energy and the heart will not work hard.

Meanwhile, Asana doesn’t use a lot of muscle so there is no Lactic Acid which causes sore or pain after. With this nature, Asana allows many people from different gender or age to perform yoga because aerobics needs strong and healthy body.

One important thing that we found out about Asana is that its store of energy not overdo like aerobics. After you have completed Asana, you will feel fresh and ready for another activity in your daily life not like aerobics where you will feel tired and need rest after.

Essential Oils for Pain Relief [health] http://www.rarinjinda.com/?p=health&idar=13 2009-10-01 18:17:24 http://www.rarinjinda.com/13
Essential Oils for Pain Relief When it comes to pain relief, aromatherapy recognizes that there are different ways to approach. For example, there are specific essential oils recommended for headache pain if the headache is caused by stress, by overindulging, by withheld anger, and so on. In the same way, muscle or joint pain could require nerve sedation, warming through increased circulation, removing inflammation and/or toxins, or a combination of these and other aspects. Massage therapists should be well equipped to determine the physical cause and description of the client's pain, which makes selecting the right essence easy if you know its physiological properties.

Understanding the mental and emotional state of the client in regard to the pain or in their current life experience will add the ability to select essences based on the subtle properties. For example, a pain blend for someone who has had a sports injury would be different than one for someone going through a difficult divorce. The most effective blend addresses both physical and subtle influences. Topical application in massage or bath is suggested, but relief through inhaling diffused blends has also been reported. Essential oils have been seen to have an almost immediate effect on muscle tissue augmented by manipulation through massage.

Musculoskeletal pain can be effectively reduced through using analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-rheumatic, detoxifying and rubefacient essential oils. By diluting certain essential oils and applying through massage therapy, one can enjoy a relaxing massage while benefitting from the pain relieving effects of oils such as: Eucalyptus, Peppermint, Rosemary and Thyme. As always, talk to your doctor before trying anything new.

De-Stress With Yoga [yoga] http://www.rarinjinda.com/?p=yoga&idar=12 2009-10-01 18:11:56 http://www.rarinjinda.com/12
De-Stress With Yoga According to the Yoga Alliance, nearly 6 million Americans practice yoga and 14 million say a doctor or therapist has recommended yoga to improve their health. In May, the National Institutes of Health celebrated its first-ever "Yoga Week" to highlight the science and practice of yoga. According to the alliance, yoga helps improve circulation and heart health, along with reducing oxidative stress and providing other anti-aging benefits. And if you're overworked and overstressed, a few minutes of yoga can help loosen those muscles and let you face the rest of your day.

Yoga teacher Denise Dunn suggests frazzled workers try these four poses to take the edge off during a busy day at the office:

* Side stretch. Raise both arms and stretch first to one side and then the other, holding the stretch for a few seconds on each side. This increases circulation and gets your spine moving the way it was meant to - much better than spending the entire day hunched over a keyboard.

* Rotation. Now slowly twist to each side. Be careful not to twist your neck excessively, especially if you're tense. Keep your chin lined up over your chest.

* Back arch. Sit at the edge of your chair and put your hands behind you. Slowly arch backward, raising your chin as you do so. Squeeze your shoulder blades together.

* Forward fold. Cross one leg so your ankle rests on the opposite knee, and then lean forward gently. This is a great way to stretch out hip and back muscles, which can tighten after hours of sitting.

According to Dunn, start each pose by slowly breathing through your nose. Hold each pose for at least three slow breaths, being careful not to overexert yourself. Remember, the goal is to relax and relieve tense muscles. This isn't a workout; it's a gentle, peaceful break from your stressful routine.

Of course, yoga isn't the only way to relax and loosen up tight muscles -- massage can accomplish the same thing. And here's the great part: More spas and health centers are offering a variety of services and programs, including massage therapy and yoga classes. Talk to your massage therapist about the best ways to de-stress and get through your busy day.

Thai Traditional Massage [talk] http://www.rarinjinda.com/?p=talk&idar=11 2009-09-29 11:37:18 http://www.rarinjinda.com/11

In the life of human being, no one can avoid sickness and how people of each nation deal with their symptoms and diseases depend on their culture, tradition and values. Of all diseases approximately 30% are severe and thus require modern medicine and health care specialists. The other 70% are not serious and common diseases that are preventable and can be treated by self-care using traditional or folk medicines. In Thailand, Thai traditional massage has been the national art and science of healing and remedy to relieve muscle fatigue, ache and pain, reduce stress, relieve back and neck pain.

As mentioned in the dispatch of Lalubaire, the French envoy to Siam during 1656-1688, “In Siam when someone gets sick, not much is done except for giving body massage or acupressure and most are healed.

Nowadays the ancient wisdom of Thai traditional massage has been developed into a part of the body of knowledge of Thai traditional medicine, a holistic medicine. Thai traditional massage can be divided into two main categories, namely “Royal massage” and “Folk massage”. Royal massage was originally the type of massage for the royal family or aristocracy; hence it is given in a very polite nature using only hands and fingers, while folk massage refers to the type of massage applying among the family members and the general public. The masseur uses different parts of his body, i.e. hands, elbows, knees, to bend, pull, press or tread.

The art and science of Thai traditional massage is now well accepted by Thais and foreigners alike and becoming very popular both in Thailand and abroad.

Some contra-indications for Thai traditional massage are e.g. too thin, too weak, rash, wound, bruise, swollen joint, jaundice, high fever, broken bone, muscle inflammation etc.

Hydrotherapy [talk] http://www.rarinjinda.com/?p=talk&idar=10 2009-09-09 14:17:22 http://www.rarinjinda.com/10

Hydrotherapy is a classic method of employing water to promote wellness and healing. It is a practice that dates back as far as ancient Greece. Currently hydrotherapy is resurgence, as more people are interested in wellness and natural methods of healing as an alternative to medication. A hydrotherapy treatment relax the body, improve strength, strengthen the immune system, equalizes circulation and increases metabolism, improves digestion and elimination, enhances the penetration of additives in the water. There are 4 important aspects of water used in hydrotherapy:

  1. Temperature
  2. Pressure
  3. Osmosis
  4. Body weight in water

Water can modify the temperature of the skin quickly. When comparing lying in still air of 25 degree Celsius and in water of 25 degree Celsius, it is experienced that the sensation of chilliness comes up more rapidly in water than in air of the same temperature. When varying the temperature, Stimulating, Sedating and Tonifying effects can be obtained. The perception of water temperature differs from person to person. It should be noted that Asians perceive the 33 degree Celsius as warm while European have the same sensation in a bath of 38 degree Celsius.

Top 10 Detox Foods [recipes] http://www.rarinjinda.com/?p=recipes&idar=9 2009-09-09 12:48:19 http://www.rarinjinda.com/9

There's no better time to give your body a healthy, fresh start! Plus, if you're thinking about lowering your weight and your real age, "eating clean" is a great first step. Add these 10 foods to your grocery cart and you'll get three terrific benefits:

  1. Lots of super-healthy liquids to flush out the body while pouring in nutrients.
  2. Fiber to keep your GI tract fit.
  3. Foods that energize cleansing enzymes in the liver, your body's built-in detox center.

    The top 10:

  1. Green leafy vegetables Eat them raw, throw them into a broth, add them to juices. Their chlorophyll helps swab out environmental toxins (heavy metals, pesticides) and protects the liver.
  2. Lemons You need to keep the fluids flowing to wash out the body and fresh lemonade is ideal. Its vitamin C, considered the detox vitamin, helps convert toxins into a water-soluble form that's easily flushed away.
  3. Watercress Put a handful into salads, soups, and sandwiches. The peppery little green leaves have a diuretic effect that helps move things through your system. And cress is rich in minerals too.
  4. Garlic Add it to everything -- salads, sauces, spreads. In addition to the bulb's cardio benefits, it activates liver enzymes that help filter out junk.
  5. Green tea This antioxidant-rich brew is one of the healthiest ways to get more fluids into your system. Bonus: It contains catechins, which speed up liver activity.
  6. Broccoli sprouts Get 'em at your health-food store. They pack 20 to 50 times more cancer-fighting, enzyme-stimulating activity into each bite than the grown-up vegetable.
  7. Sesame seeds They're credited with protecting liver cells from the damaging effects of alcohol and other chemicals. For a concentrated form, try tahini, the yummy sesame seed paste that's a staple of Asian cooking.
  8. Cabbage There are two main types of detoxifying enzymes in the liver; this potent veggie helps activate both of them. Coleslaw, anyone?
  9. Psyllium A plant that's rich in soluble fiber, like oat bran, but more versatile. It mops up toxins (cholesterol too) and helps clear them out. Stir powdered psyllium into juice to help cleanse your colon, or have psyllium-fortified Bran Buds for breakfast.
  10. Fruits, fruits, fruits They're full of almost all the good things above: vitamin C, fiber, nutritious fluids, and all kinds of antioxidants. Besides, nothing tastes better than a ripe mango, fresh berries, or a perfect pear

A great way to start a new health & wellness program. It is the process of gentle cleansing our body from toxins, chemicals and cancerogenous substances. Toxic substances are often the cause of many ailments in relation to improper digestion of food and stored waste. Toxicity has been proven to impair our well being and generally lowers our immune system. A toxic is a substance that irritates our body, undermine our health and causes degeneration of body tissue. Through detoxification, we enable our body to clear and filter toxins and waste. We need to give our body a break and a chance to revive itself. One good tip of exercise? Maintaining a goal. However, to prevent injury, every type of exercise should have time limitation and be done in moderate manner.

Aerobics or Cardiovascular such as running, dancing, tennis, swimming, cycling and treadmill will not eat too much of your time. But those who prefer these types of exercise should spend 20-60 minutes at a time depending on muscle condition and training experience.

The exercise of flexibility or stretching such as Yoga or Pilates should take at least 30 minutes and a maximum of 95 minutes at a time. To acquire maximum benefit and good body balance, one should exercise at least 3 times a week.

Fruits and Vegetables - Rich in Goodness! [recipes] http://www.rarinjinda.com/?p=recipes&idar=6 2009-08-25 11:36:45 http://www.rarinjinda.com/6

The old saying, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away," has been replaced with a recommended 2 to 4 fruits a day along with 3 to 5 vegetable servings. Fruits and vegetables are low in fat and provide vitamins, minerals, water, and fiber.

Fruits

Fruits are one food group that are usually welcomed by children. Fruits are an easy way to meet your family's need for vitamins like A and C. Vitamin A is crucial for healthy eyes, skin, and hair, and protection against colds and illnesses. Vitamin C helps your family absorb calcium and phosphorus for healthy bones and teeth, and promotes proper healing, muscle and nerve functions, and also protects against colds and flus. Fruits are rich in potassium important for proper heart and nerve function and cell health as well as fructose which gives kids a healthy energy boost.

Servings of Fruits

2 to 4 servings daily

    1 serving equals:
  • 1 medium sized fruit
  • 1/2 cup cooked or canned fruit
  • 1/2/cup fruit juice
  • 1/4/ cup dried fruit
  • 1/2 cup chopped, raw fruit
  • 1/2 cup frozen fruit

Vegetables

Historically, getting children to eat vegetables has been a struggle for parents. How many times did you hear your parents say, "Eat your vegetables, or no dessert"? Served fresh and attractively, vegetables can become one of your child's favorite foods. The key is to keep it colorful and simple. Cut veggies into interesting shapes, serve as finger food with a bit of nutritious, low-fat dip, and take your time introducing new "exotic" vegetables like artichokes and asparagus.

Vegetables are rich in vitamins, minerals, cellulose, and fiber. Green leafy vegetables are rich in vitamins A, C, E, K, and folic acid. Carrots are rich in Vitamin A. Potatoes are a good source of Vitamin C. Vegetables are important for your child's digestion, growth, heart and nerve functions, teeth, and bowel regulation. Ideally, vegetables should be served raw, steamed, or lightly baked.

Servings of Vegetables

3 to 5 servings daily

    1 serving equals:
  • 1 cup raw leafy vegetable

Hydrocolon Therapy [talk] http://www.rarinjinda.com/?p=talk&idar=5 2009-08-19 14:36:47 http://www.rarinjinda.com/5
Hydrocolon Therapy

(Colon Cleansing, Colon Irrigation, Detoxification)

A great way to start a new health & wellness program. It is the process of gentle cleansing the large Intestine (Colon) from toxins, chemicals and cancerogenous substances.

How The Health of Our Colon Affects Our Total Health?

The colon is a tube approximately 5 feet long and 2-1/2 inches in diameter. A healthy colon has uniform size and tone. It extends from the caecum, where it joins the small intestine, up and across the abdominal cavity and down the left side of the body until it reaches the sigmoid and rectum.

Auto-Intoxication (Self-Poisoning)

We experience better health and well being when the colon is clean and functioning normally. When the colon is congested with stagnant wastes, poisons back up into our system and pollute the inner environment. This is called auto-intoxication which literally means "Self-Poisoning". All of the body's systems and tissues are affected by the auto-intoxication. Auto-intoxication can be a causative factor in numerous serious diseases and is considered by many to be the underlying reason for disease. The colon is the largest perpetrator of disease of any organ in the body, and is said to be the initiator of 80% of all critical illness. There are many contributing factors to auto-intoxication from a toxic bowl. Improper diet, insufficient exercise, stress, overeating and ignoring the "call of nature" can all lead to bowl problems.

The Benefits of Colon Cleansing

Colonics offer relief from a variety of disturbances by cleansing the colon of impacted and putrefactive faecal matter. Fatigue, gas, headaches, irritability, skin problems, cold hands and feet, lethargy are among the problems people have found relieved by colon cleansing. Constipation, of course, is another, as well as chronic diarrhoea. Your sense of well-being is often dramatically improved with colon cleansing. You feel lighter, more energetic. The body can again assimilate food in the colon and better defend itself against disease. Natural peristalsis, tone and regularity are restored and many serious diseases may be averted through this gentle, sterile, scientific technique. Colon cleansing is a key factor in the restoration of the body's natural balance or what we call good health and feel good.

YOU ARE WELL COVERED AND YOUR MODESTY IS GIVEN TOP PRIORITY DURING THE PROCEDURE.

Got Back Pain? Practice Proper Ergonomics [health] http://www.rarinjinda.com/?p=health&idar=4 2009-08-19 14:34:33 http://www.rarinjinda.com/4

Kevin Wong, DC, discusses easy ways to prevent and relieve common back pain conditions by providing the following ergonomic tips.

Think safety: When you make your everyday activities safe to perform, it will help reduce the undue stress on your body. This includes having your computer work stations at home and at your office set up properly for your body. Generally speaking, the keyboard height should be the same height as when your arms are comfortably at your side with the elbows bent. The mouse should also be close to your dominant wrist while your arms are at your sides.

Avoid poor posture: Whenever you sit, it is safest to sit on a full-back chair with plenty of support. Crossing the ankles is fine, but do not cross your legs. This puts tremendous pressure on the lower back, contributing to back pain. Also, if you are experiencing low back pain, it's a good idea not to sit on the couch or sofa, since they are typically too soft and unsupportive for the low back.

Lift properly: When lifting items, use the legs and the trunk of the body rather than the arms. Always bring objects closer to your abdomen or chest, as that is the center of gravity and support for most people. Try to avoid bending the back while you lift.

Sleep well: The most supportive position for the body during sleep is on your back with a pillow under your knees. The next best position is on your side with a pillow between your knees and your head on a pillow that is thick enough to span the distance of your neck to the shoulders. A neck pillow that is too thin will kink the neck and could lead to neck and upper back pain down the road.

Yin Yoga, The natural way of well-being [yoga] http://www.rarinjinda.com/?p=yoga&idar=2 2009-08-18 16:46:21 http://www.rarinjinda.com/2

If you prefer to heal and restore your physical health by natural way or yoga, we believed that you will be satisfied with the new science of restoring health called "Yin Yoga". Yin yoga was popularized in Western Culture by teachers Paul Grilley and Sarah Powers. The teachings of Paul Grilley incorporate ideas related to traditional Chinese medicine and qigong, such as Taoist yoga and meridians.

The original styles of physical (Hatha) yoga were very "yin" in nature; that is, passive, long held stretches. Over the last two hundred years, the style of yoga has changed, mainly through western influence, to become very "yang" like. The focus of Hatha yoga has shifted, to lots of emphasis on energizing practices and building muscular strength. This type of yoga can be very beneficial, but like all things in life, in order to find health and happiness, balance is necessary.

In ancient India, yogis have seen 72,000 energy pathways in the energetic body (pranamaya kosha) called the "nadis". In China, the Taoists have similar ideas called the meridians. In India, the word "prana" means life-force and to the Chinese, it is called "chi". These are not coincidence findings. There are people in ancient times that have withdrawn their senses to go within themselves and realized that human body is beyond the physical.

Yin Yoga focuses on stretching and strengthening of the connective tissue of the joints (denser tissues such as fascia, ligaments, tendons and cartilage) through passive stretches, performed gently and safely. This provides greater flexibility and a sense of ease and lightness in the body.

Energy (prana or chi) is believed to flow through the channels (nadis or meridians) of the connective tissue layer of the body. Yin Yoga practice can therefore enable the harmonious flow of life-energy through the clearing of these path-ways. This enables the body organs to function better. Blockages in these energy channels are believed to lead to symptoms such as feelings of numbness in the extremities after long periods of sitting still. Therefore, regular practice of Yin Yoga can enhance the ease of sitting still, whether it is performed at work, on transport, or in meditation.

The sense of well-being cultivated in this style of yoga uniquely enhances experience of meditation and relaxation, yet also enhances yang practices.

A Glass of Wine A Day Keeps The Doctor Away [recipes] http://www.rarinjinda.com/?p=recipes&idar=1 2009-08-18 15:15:02 http://www.rarinjinda.com/1
Drinking wine daily offers significant health benefits.

Wine is not just a pleasure to drink, it also offers health benefits. But are you drinking enough wine to take advantage of these additional medical marvels? And how do you keep an opened bottle of wine from spoiling throughout the week if you only drink a glass a day?

Most wine enthusiasts are aware that wine offers several health benefits, but the magnitude of benefits and the quantity of wine required to achieve these benefits may be more than you think. Beyond the well known improvements to the heart, wine also positively affects many other areas from delaying dementia to preventing arthritis. Here are some of the most impactful benefits:

Improves Overall Heart Health

Wine has shown, after two decades of research, to reduce heart attack risk by up to 60%. An enzyme in wine (aldehyde dehydrogenase 2) prevents damage to heart cells by eliminating toxic byproducts. Fiber and antioxidents in wine, especially Tempranillo, reduces blood pressure and cholesterol better than oats, psyllium and other fiber sources.

Delays Dementia and Alzheimer's

Grape seed polyphenols block the formation of plaques in the brain that kill surrounding brain cells, which is associated with causing Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia.

Prevents Arthritis

Studies performed by researchers in Sweden have shown that moderate wine consumption can reduce rheumatoid arthritis by 50%.

Lowers (Type 2) Diabetes Risk

A study by Harvard School of Public Health found that alcohol in wine lowered the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes by 58% versus nondrinkers, speculating that the wine alcohol helps regulate insulin and blood glucose levels by slowing the glucose passage through the digestive track.

Reduces Throat Cancer Risk

According to a Kaiser Permanente study, wine consumption lowers the risk of Barrett's Esophagus, a precursor to esophageal cancer, by 56%.

To achieve these benefits, however, 7-14 glasses of wine must be drunk per week. Consumptions must be spread out evenly, as binge drinking not only obstructs the health benefits it also offers negative health consequences. For some (myself included) that is a lot more wine per week than is currently consumed.
